CHAPTER 28

“Earth to Lola.”

Lola pulled her gaze away from the crashing blue waves and turned to meet Amber’s gaze.

“Sorry.” Lola felt the heat of Amber’s look and slumped slightly in her chair. They were sitting in the outside brassiere of a landmark Santa Monica hotel and Amber had chosen a beach-facing table, just off the boardwalk; prime real estate for any celebutante wanting to be photographed. “I’ve had a lot on my mind,” Lola muttered in the face of Amber’s unwavering gaze.

“Your adoption thing? Again?” Amber didn’t bother to hide her boredom. “You always said you didn’t want to know anything,” her friend reminded her and Lola nodded, remembering her youthful disinterest.

“Maybe I do now?” Since the last day of her community service, thoughts of finding out more about where she had come from had played on Lola’s mind and she’d stupidly confided her plans to Amber. Lola watched as Amber stirred a straw through her lemonade cooler.

“Why? After so long?” Amber asked and Lola felt her doubts rise up again. This was a question she’d asked herself and still she could come up with no concrete answer.

“I don’t know, it’s just like sometimes I feel like something’s missing. Maybe if I know where I come from…”

“You’ll know where you’re going.” Amber burst out with a derisory snort. “Stop with the Oprah bullshit. You come from Beverly Hills. When people go digging into things, they usually find out stuff they don’t want or need to know. Just leave things alone. Focus on here and now.”

Lola turned once again to glance at the sea and she felt the pull of Amber’s words. Just the thought of delving into her background felt exhausting and she felt a lick of anxiety at what she might discover. Perhaps she should just leave well alone. Lola looked up again as Amber reached into her bag and pulled out two tickets.

“What’s that?” A smile spread across Amber’s face.

“Your biggest payday yet,” Amber replied setting one of the tickets down in front of Lola. “We’re going to Vegas.”

“Why?” Lola queried.

“Because it’s Sin City, it’s New Year’s Eve and a new resort is paying you 50k to show up, party, and get photographed in their bar.” Lola looked up at Amber in shock.

“Fifty thousand dollars?”

“Absofuckinglutely. 50k all yours, less my cut. Don’t say I don’t do anything for you.” For the first time that morning, Lola gave a bright, full-beam smile. There was nothing like Sin City to cure what ailed her and it was time she set aside her blues. Lola raised her drink and she and Amber clinked glasses.

“Sin City, here we come.”

“Atta girl.”

Grace was lost.

Curled up in bed, her head buried in the paperback novel that had held her attention the last two hours, it took a moment for the muted and yet insistent buzzing of her mobile phone to pierce her consciousness. Sitting up, Grace pulled her glasses on and followed the sound until she located the phone half under one of her pillows. As she grasped the handset, the vibrating stopped.
